What might have been
Just what I wanted for general purposes: recording kit airplane construction; bird watching (motorized zoom lens); deer night time intruders; and, at $280, affordable.Bought the camera some 3 months back but had so much else to do that only tried to set it up recently.First insert the 128 Gb SD Card,: unscrew the camera lens cover; insert the card (noticed a ‘reset’ button next to the insertion slot); screw the cover back on (fine thread in aluminum – just the design for cross-threading) very carefully-red marks on cover and base lined up, but SIGNIFICANTLY only after going past these and rotating back.Ran the accompanying mini CD, no doubt contained user manual and setup program.First problem: CD contains Trojan 2 virus so unable to open CD.Second problem: on seeking a firmware up-date on the extensive web-site, unable to find a listing for my model number. Contact HIK: no response to date.Plus: downloaded setup software and generic manual for my model type.Third problem: connect power supply and Ethernet cable to router and initiate ‘seek device’ in SADP Tool software. Nothing!Fourth and final problem: Camera shows no response to power connection (no lights, whirring, nothing). Manual shows a reset button on the exterior body of the camera: no such item on mine but remember the one on the interior. Try to unscrew the lens cover again. Impossible, even with clinch straps. After three months no chance of returning the item so cut off the lens cover. Problem was not cross threading but a soft gasket that became bunched by over-tightening and provided an obdurate friction brake. Operated the reset button with zero results.Unit was DOA. Left with $280 of what might have been. Conclusions: no matter how busy, one should immediately try out the purchase within the return time-frame.Worked extensively in China. Have affection for the people and respect for their culture, and achievements. Also, gratitude to be able to afford tools that, otherwise, would be too expensive. HIK is a Chinese company with an impressive product line and an obvious will to build an international reputation (excellent web site, decent documentation- English somewhat tortuous). Problem (as with Japan, and Taiwan initially), is with quality control, exacerbated by the need, in a booming economy, for sub-contracting, to less dedicated companies.
