Good Choice
This is a solid choice for what it is. I use ours mainly for monitoring the water temperature for poaching and I use it several times per week. It has survived a few drops and the beeper is the proper loudness., It would be nice if this was modernized by having an auto on/off function.

Wow, does this work well!
This thermometer is terrific for cooking meat to the desired temp. The magnet doesn't work on my oven, I think it must have a plastic front, but instead I just set it on the counter next to the oven. The cord is plenty long enough to reach to the counter without any problem. I have about three meat thermometers that never seem to agree on the temp, but this one is very accurate. I love the setting that allows you set how long you want to cook the meat but it sets off an alarm when it reaches the desired temp so you don't overcook the item. The only problem I had the first time I tried to use it was that I didn't notice the tiny black button on the back that must be turned on before setting the temp and cook time. Once I found that it was easy to set. You also need to save the plastic tube that protects the tip of the probe, so be sure not to throw that away. It is very easy to wash, you just wipe off the tip that went in the meat.

Happy so far
I bought the Polder Classic Digital Thermometer because that's the one Jean-Pierre Bréhier uses. It seems to work great.

Reliable, does the job, some annoyances
We had an older "original" Polder timer for at least five years. When it finally gave up the ghost we explored other fancier options, but in the end decided to buy another one of these timers. The loyalty should count for something in your buying decision. Though as it turns out, there are a few differences from the older "original" version, some of which do not thrill me. On the plus side: * The timer does what it advertises: it lets you know when the time is up. It's fairly easy to set the time (30 minutes, or whatever). * This display is readable, even for older eyes. * The alarm is loud enough to be heard, even at the other end of the house. * Cooking with a temperature probe really really really does make a difference. Over the years, I've been surprised by how often a cookbook's "roast for an hour, or until internal temperature is --" instructions are way off. With the temp probe, I've had turkeys done 45 minutes earlier than the time estimate, and other items need an additional 20 minutes. You'll really appreciate this with grilling and baking (such as scalding milk). * The price is decent. * The magnet on the back makes it easy for this gizmo to live on the side of my fridge. * The one I had previously lasted for quite a while, and I needed to replace the battery only once. (Actually we still have the old one; the temperature probe still works so it's relegated to BBQ duty now.) The negatives: * On the older version, if the timer went off and you ignored or missed it, it would beep for a minute, then take a break (maybe another minute?) and start beeping all over again. So if you'd run outside to check the mail while dinner was cooking, the noise would alert you shortly after you returned. This model beeps once (for a full minute, I think); afterward, it quietly starts counting up. That is, when you eventually say, "Shouldn't that be cooked by now?" you discover that your dish had been overcooking for precisely 13 minutes. Not very helpful. * With both the earlier and current model, I wish there was a way to adjust the time set, not just start over. For example, imagine I had a dish that cooked for 20 minutes, then you add veggies or whatnot, then simmer another 15 minutes. It takes but a moment to set to 20 minutes. Fine. But to set it to 15 minutes for the second round, I have to zero out the timer and count it back up to 15. It's slightly annoying, when what I really want is a "back-arrow." I can live with such minor irritations, mind you; this does not keep me awake at night. But I keep reaching for a product feature that is not there. Overall, this is a good kitchen timer that is likely to do everything you want. It has a few imperfections, but none of them bother me enough to make me go shopping for a replacement.

By Far My Favorite Timer
This is by far my favorite timer, aside from the temperature probe it comes with. I bought this for the probe thermometer with alarm for cooking a turkey properly and it did an excellent job at that. The temperature reading seems perfect. You put it in a deep location in the meat without touching the bone and it will tell you exactly when done. Our first turkey turned out perfectly. There really is no guesswork if you know it is done by the temperature. I bought it after watching Alton Brown on the Food Network and did exactly what I expected and hoped. But we ended up using this all the time as our main timer. I find the timer aspect very easy to use, easy to read, easy to hear, last a very long time on one battery, and very durable. I've tried several other kitchen timers and none of them stacked up. So many were hard to set, didn't respond as well to buttons, or just didn't seem as responsive. I would have thought a timer would be the simplest thing for a gadget to do by now, but this is by far my favorite as a kitchen timer. I like it so much I just bought another for a 2nd timer to time two things. I have another timer that can time 3 things at once but I can never seem to remember how to set, stop, and start each one with enough simplicity to do quickly while cooking. I prefer separate timers at this point. I'm even planning to buy one more. So the probe thermometer is great, but I really like this for its perfect kitchen timer capability in my opinion. I just keep the probe in a drawer to use once or twice a year. I wouldn't worry about not being able to turn it off. Like all other kitchen timers, there is no off switch. But the batteries last a very long time. I think my batter lasts 2-3 years under routine use as a timer. I've only replaced the battery once. If you only use it once a year to cook something for a holiday, then you can probably just remove the battery which is better for storing electronics anyway.

This is my first remote thermometer and it works great. Set it and wait for the temperature alarm to go off. I don't even bother with the timer. You know what the amount of time should be roughly anyways and this unit sits on my counter and goes off when the internal temperature is correct. If I am cooking more than 1 piece I put it into the thickest one and when it goes off it's perfectly done. If the pieces differ in size by a fair amount then just put it into the smaller piece/s first and when it goes off remove those and stick it into the larger one/s. Hit the reset button and wait until it goes off again. It's very easy and works great. There are 2 switches. The one on the back is for main power on and off while the one on the front turns the alarm function on or off. When i just received it i didn't understand why it wouldn't turn on when I used the front switch. It took me a little while before I found the main on/ off switch on the back. It's a small switch and easy to miss but is black on the white housing for contrast.
