I bought this hoping it would make it easier to figure out which lugs were out of tune on my timbales. Unfortunately, its readings were so wildly random (varying by as much as 20 Hz, or an entire half step — which, BTW, was completely implausible, as the head was way closer than that to begin with) that trying to follow its readings just made the tuning worse. Much worse. I pretty quickly gave up and went back to tuning it by hand, because this provided no assistance whatsoever. I'm pretty sure there's just no way for electronics to distinguish where the problem is without multiple microphones at significantly different places around the drum and doing some pretty hairy math, and this device does not appear to do anything like that. Without that, it randomly picks between the various frequencies no matter where you hit, so you're basically just guessing whether it is right about it being high or low. I'm going to return it for a drum dial and see if that is more useful.
